It’s that time again…..All nighters, endless coffee runs, despondently watching your friends’ antics on social media, while you’re stuck in the library. Yes, it’s finals week!
But seriously, it’s a tough time for everyone right now. You’re looking at your list of projects, presentations, exams, assessments etc and wonder how you’re going to fit it all in. But don’t panic – there’s only a week or so more to go and you can get through this – and if you find yourself struggling, the university has resources that can help.
First off – some personal tips that have helped me get through many, MANY years of exams:-
(i) Take a brain break. Every hour or so, I step away from the laptop and take a walk, scroll through Facebook, do laundry, read a news app – anything that gives my brain a rest for just a few minutes. You’re not so busy that you can’t do this. And I find it extends the time I can study for considerably longer.
(ii) Exercise. We’re all different, but for me, going for an early morning run or bike ride clears my head for the rest of the day. Find out what works for you. It can make a huge difference.
(iii) Find somewhere to study that brings out the best in your work. Some people love the library, some people have their favourite coffee shop. Mine changes regularly, but sitting out by the water currently helps calm and focus my mind.
(iv) Tell your friends. Let your friends know that you’re in the finals zone and to please withhold tempting party invitations for a couple of weeks. Otherwise you know how this goes…..you only meant to pop over for one drink, but suddenly it’s five hours later and 11 o’clock at night and tomorrow’s presentation is still 6 slides short….
(v) Give yourself something to look forward to. I find this hugely motivational. Knowing there’s some good stuff on the other side of this makes me work harder. A weekend away, new sports equipment or outfit, you get the idea. Have fun with it!
These are just some of the things that work for me. They may not be right for you and if you find you need more support, please contact the university. Wellness Resources in particular should be top of your list. Of course, they’re available all year round, but right now they’re also running Test Anxiety Labs, which they call internal prep for finals!
The dates are:-
April 16 & 17 12-1pm
April 18 4.30pm-5.30pm
all in room 5206.
If you’d like more information, contact Lori Granger at firstname.lastname@example.org or just pop in on the day. They’re here to help and they want to hear from you! Good luck everyone!
