Memorial Day

Hello everyone! Today we celebrate Memorial Day. I’m sure we are all excited with a three-day weekend. A day off to celebrate a very meaningful cause – our fallen troops. Celebrating today means honoring the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

With that in mind – I wanted to share some fun facts about Memorial Day and some fun activities as we all shelter-in-place.

Fun Facts:

There was a name change: It was originally known as “Decoration Day” when Memorial Days were celebrated after the Civil War because flowers and flags were laid on fallen soldiers’ graves.

There was a date change: Memorial Day was initially celebrated on May 30th from 1868 – 1970. It changed to the last Monday of May per the “Uniform Monday Holiday Act”. This also adjusted the current dates for President’s Day and MLK Jr. Day.

It was initially celebrated just for the Civil War: Memorial Day was initially focused on honoring the lives of fallen Civil War soldiers but it has morphed over time. After WWI, the holiday expanded to honoring casualties of all American wars.

Fun Activities: (Links in the title)

Presidio at Home: Experience the park virtually from wherever you are! They have a great collection of videos and photos which means we can all experience the park as we shelter-in-place.

Virtual Concert: Check out this awesome virtual concert which helps to raise awareness for those in the Bay Area music community affected by the pandemic and shelter-in-place.

It’s BBQ Time!: I love to grill and BBQ everything! I hope these recipes tempt you and get you to fire up that grill. A cast-iron or griddle pan would do just as well if you don’t have a grill.  Have a look at these awesome grilling ideas – who knew you could throw watermelon on the grill?!

Also, today marks the unofficial start to the summer! Time to find that white dress or white shirt you’ve been waiting to wear – put it on, and let’s get the summer started! (even if we are just wearing it at home 😊). Stay safe and stay healthy! See you next week.

P.S. Today is also Africa Day! We celebrate this as it marks the unity of African countries from its creation on May 25th 1963. Shout out to all my fellow Africans!
