Thoughts on Current Events

Hello everyone,

I hope that you are all doing well, staying safe and staying healthy. There is certainly a lot going on around the world with the global pandemic and of course elections here in the Unites States. As an international student I pride myself on staying up to date with both local and global events.

It has certainly been an interesting time to be in California and the United States during the elections. As an international student, this has been a huge learning opportunity for me about government, elections and what it means to vote! Here is a resource which I have been using to stay up-to-date on everything elections – The New York Times live update page.

Also, as we are on the topic of elections, I have also been following the local races very closely. It has been great learning about our local California candidates, state propositions and keeping track of the ballot measures. Here is the resource I have been using to keep in the know – San Francisco Chronicle. Definitely my go-to for local news.

Extra, extra! Read all about it! Speaking of the Coronavirus, I am sure many of you may also have heard about the new vaccine from Pfizer! This is incredible news for the world as we are feeling the weight of the global pandemic. Pfizer along with their partner BioNTech, a German company, announced that their vaccine was “more than 90 percent effective”. However, before jumping to any conclusions, I urge you as critical thinkers to do your own research. Here is an article I have been reading with ‘11 Things You Need to Know’ about the vaccine from the New York Times. Please read it and let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Last but not least, as many of you may have heard, most of Europe and especially the UK are experiencing a second wave of the Coronavirus (Covid-19). As such many European countries are going back into national lockdowns, or how I prefer to see it is shelter-in-place – a much more positive attitude. This makes it more difficult for everyone, and as a student myself working and studying from home, I have had a small dose of what everyone is going through. I feel for everyone out there going through difficult times although I have faith that they won’t last forever. For more information, data and updates about Covid-19 in Europe please have a look at this article by CNN.

As we come to the peak of the fall trimester, I know like myself many of you are looking forward to Thanksgiving and of course winter break. Hang in there, we are so close!

Stay safe and stay healthy,

Until next time!
